CROSSROADS 2...... MY DECSION!!!

This experience of the rotations has allowed my conception of art and design to change, it has defined the two in a crossover but a literal way allowing me to be open minded to all areas of art and design.

The reason i chose to do a foundation course was to help me decide on what area i want to specialise in overall. I came into this course with a fine art based portfolio, as i consider myself an expressive painter, however i also had an interest in fashion. This all changed. These rotations has help me drastically to decide what area i want to specialise in because after my first rotation which was 'fashion and textiles' i was completely drawn away from the whole concept of fashion,(well what i thought was fashion), before i started it i really believed that i would have enjoyed the work. but i didn’t  i found it boring, i loss interest completely after the first week, i tried to incorporate some of my fine art skills into my work to make it more interesting and enjoyable for me but it didn’t  quite work, i dont think i understood the area of fashion and textiles they were relating to us and due to this i honestly don’t  think i completed a strong body of work through this area of the rotation....fashion and textiles will be my last choice, as i enjoyed it the very least. This drastic mind change decision was very unexpected, i thought that by the end of the rotations i would have been drawn between fine art and fashion and textiles. But it has completely changed.

My second rotation was ‘vis com’, i surprisingly enjoyed this however i didn’t think i would. I found the brief we was given was specific but interesting at the same time. I liked the whole concept of (sending a message to somebody, using visual communication)i found that it allowed everyone’s own ideas and approach to come out as everyone’s work was completely different. The body of work which i produced was all based around fine art, although i was following the brief my work leant more on the fine art side than the visual communication, i met the brief requirements however my final piece more looked like a piece of art work on the wall than a message being sent, this was not done purposely as  was speaking to one of the vis com tutors about my work and i got told to ‘try and not fall off the set brief’, I took that into great consideration and discovered that i cant work around a brief which is too specific. This made me have doubts about considering vis com as a choice.

My last rotation was 3-D spatial, i don’t really know what to say, i thought the whole concept of our project was good however i am just not a 3-d person i work better on 2-d.I get frustrated making 3-d models ect. however the drawing part of it i really enjoyed, i felt comfortable whilst doing that i think my drawing part of this area is good however i tried on the 3-D aspect i just don’t think it worked for me. so 3-D spatial is not the area i will be specialising in.

well, well, well......FINE ART i enjoyed this part of the rotation soo much, i felt i could be myself, the atmosphere, the environment, the enthusiasm and passion i have for making art drove me to produce well what i feel a complete and interesting body of work. I enjoyed this rotation the most out of all the rest as it allowed me to express myself through my work. I liked everything about the two weeks in fine art, to be honest i didnt want it to end, the openness of the brief also intrigued me, as i prefer not working to a structured set brief this aspect allowed my work to have a more personal and individual approach, also showing my self related thoughts and conceptions and how i express and deliver a piece of work. I looked back on all my work and sketch books for all the rotations to compare my work in terms of effort and time, unique and artistic skills, clear development i tried to think otherwise, meaning i didn’t just want to choose the area in which i most enjoyed, i also wanted to look at the area in which i had the most strong body of work and through this I came to a certain and a definitely right decision in choosing Fine art as the area i want to develop in, my work proves that i enjoyed the rotation and that i have a strong interest in fine art ,it shows i have the correct skills to embrace more artistic work and it also shows that i produced the strongest body of work in fine art than in all the rest of the rotations.
